Stevenson married Fanny Osborne in May 1880. The choice of subject was influenced by Stevenson's father, who wished his son to continue the prestigious family tradition. In 1867, Stevenson enrolled at Edinburgh University to study engineering. She told him many ghost stories and supernatural tales which seem to resonate throughout Stevenson's later fiction, reappearing in several of his short-stories, such as 'The Body Snatchers', 'The Merry Men', and 'Thrawn Janet'. A sickly boy whose mother was also often unwell, Stevenson spent much of his childhood with the family nurse, Alison Cunningham. Robert Louis Stevenson in this novel tries to separate evil from good, and takes up some aspects of the Gothic tradition. Hyde can be defined as "alter ego", in fact although Jekyll disapproves of Hyde's evil, he is deeply attracted to his 'dark side', which gives visibility to an aspect that Jekyll and the whole Victorian society have always tried to hide or suppress. The only solution is to physically eliminate oneself, to put an end to the torment. Jekyll discovers that the potion is now ineffective on him, so he is destined to transform into Hyde in a definite way.
Jekyll confesses that he worked on a kind of potion to free the double nature (the good and the evil) however, his ambition has failed to control the mutation: Hyde is taking over and the transformations are happening more and more frequently, so much so that he accidentally kills a friend of jekyll.ĭr.
